Nathan's Opens first location in Coney Island on Surf Avenue

NATHAN’S HOT DOGS OPEN AND PROMOTIONALLY SELL FOR HALF PRICE 1916 Cooney Island, New York Twenty -year old Nathan Handwerker washed dishes and later worked weekends at Feltman's, the inventor of hot dogs. Within a year he saved over $300. and opened his own business down the road at the corners of Stillwell and Surf Avenue in Coney Island. His signs shrieked like fire-engine sirens. Hot Dogs for five cents a-piece, half the price of Feltman’s. Nathan used a twelve-foot grill and put a hint of garlic in his sausages.  Many of the passers-by were weary of the price. At first Handwerker hired bums to stand around the counter and paid them in hot dogs in order to give the impression he was busy.  He then took the concept to the next level, and had the bums shave themselves and wear doctor's outfits so they looked well-off.  The new sign above the establishment proclaimed, "If doctors eat our hot dogs, you know they're good!"

TV Show of the Day
Davy Crockett - Episode: Indian Scout in 1950
The Davy Crockett television show aired in 1954-1955 and starred Fess Parker. It is considered the first miniseries of all time running only for five episodes as segments of the Disneyland television show. It captured the hearts of both young and old, and became an instant pop sensation. The theme song “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” soon was a number one single, selling in the millions. In addition, a huge Davy Crockett merchandising craze swept the nation featuring Davy Crockett lunch boxes, thermoses, board games, moccasins, playsuits, trading cards, Davy Crockett comic books and Little Golden Books. Every kid had to have a coonskin cap, and over 100 million dollars was raised from these merchandise sales helping to fund the construction of Disneyland.
